REMUNERATION:

Hummingsong offers an attractive and competitive rehearsal rate with superannuation
reflecting the commitment and professional standards expected of our conductors.

LOCATION:

BRISBANE: Annerley (Tuesdays) and Ashgrove (Wednesdays).

NOTE: Applicants can apply to conduct one or two choirs and should indicate their preference in their application.

HOURS:

Arrival: 7.00pm
Rehearsal: 7.30pm - 9.30pm
Day of week: Tuesdays and Wednesdays

START DATE: Term 2, week commencing April 20th, 2026

THE CONDUCTOR ROLE / PURPOSE:

The Hummingsong Conductor is a pivotal leader responsible for inspiring, directing, and guiding our new Brisbane choirs in Annerley and Ashgrove. This role requires a passionate, musical professional who will not only ensure artistic excellence and enjoyable choral singing but will also actively foster a supportive, inclusive, and joyous community environment for all members. The Conductor is instrumental in upholding the Hummingsong mission by delivering a rewarding artistic experience that sustains our membership and drives our core social impact.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Choral Direction & Rehearsal Management
  • Plan, prepare, and lead weekly rehearsals (Tuesdays in Annerley and Wednesdays in Ashgrove) to achieve high level of musical standards.
  • Conduct warm-ups, vocal training, and musical instruction suitable for singers of all levels within a non-auditioned environment.
  • Ensure timely learning and polished performance of repertoire for all concerts and events.
  • Liaise with the Hummingsong Office regarding the selection and preparation of music, utilizing the extensive library resources provided.
Community & Membership Engagement
  • Actively foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive atmosphere that aligns with Hummingsong’s commitment to women’s wellbeing and social impact.
  • Ensure a welcoming and engaging experience for all new and existing choir members, playing a key role in membership retention.
  • Act as the primary, professional communication link between the choir members and the Hummingsong Office.
SKILLS, QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE:

Essential Criteria

Candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:
  • Musical Education: Qualification in Music, Conducting, Music Education, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Conducting Experience: Proven experience in directing, leading, and conducting large vocal ensembles or choirs.
  • Vocal Technique & Instruction: Strong understanding of vocal pedagogy and the ability to effectively teach healthy vocal technique to singers of varying levels and abilities.
  • Interpersonal Leadership: Exceptional communication, empathy, humour, and people-management skills to inspire and motivate volunteers and choir members.
  • Organisational Skills: High level of self-management and organisational ability to plan rehearsals, prepare repertoire, and manage all related logistics efficiently.
  • Commitment to Mission: A genuine alignment with the Hummingsong mission.
Desirable Criteria

Experience in the following areas would be highly regarded:
  • Community Music: Prior experience working with community or non-auditioned  arts organisations.
  • Musical Versatility: Familiarity and experience conducting a wide range of musical styles.
  • Piano Skills: Basic piano skills for running rehearsals & sectionals are very advantageous
